What To Pack For Dance College

What To Pack For Dance College

By Amelia Fay on 27th Aug 2026

Starting dance college is an extremely exciting time in any young dancer’s life. But when it comes to preparation, it can become slightly daunting. New classes, new expectations and an overwhelming shopping list can all feel like a lot to think about.

Before you start filling your basket with new dancewear, the best place to begin is by checking your dance college’s uniform and kit requirements. Every college will have its own expectations, from the styles and colours of dancewear you’ll need to the shoes required for different classes.

Once you know what’s expected, you can start making a list and building your dance college essentials. But we’re here to help minimise the stress, so you can feel prepared and ready to begin this exciting new chapter. To help you get started, we’ve put together a dance college guide of some of the key items you’re likely to need throughout your training.

Dance College Checklist

Dancewear

Dancewear will be a big part of your everyday life at dance college, so choosing good-quality pieces that can keep up with your training is important. With long rehearsals, multiple classes and plenty of movement, your dancewear needs to be comfortable, flexible and able to move with your body without restricting you. It will also need to withstand regular washing, so investing in quality pieces that can last through your busy schedule is well worth it.

Our Elevated range was created with exactly this in mind. Bringing together some of our best-loved dancewear styles with upgraded fabrics, modern fits and thoughtful details, the collection is designed to provide comfort and durability, not to mention it being a more sustainable choice.

Leotards

A good selection of leotards is a must-have for any dance college student. Depending on your college’s requirements and your timetable, you may need different styles for ballet, contemporary, jazz and other classes. Having a few reliable options in your wardrobe means you’ll always have something comfortable and class-ready to wear.

Tights

Dance tights are another essential, with different styles and colours often required for different classes. Convertible tights are ideal for pointe classes, while footless tights are a practical choice for dancing barefoot. It’s worth having a few pairs to hand, particularly during busy training weeks when you’ll be washing and changing your dancewear regularly.

Tops, shorts, leggings & warm-ups

For classes that allow more flexibility with what you wear, keep your wardrobe stocked with comfortable tops, shorts, leggings and warm-ups. These are particularly useful for contemporary, commercial and rehearsals, as well as keeping your muscles warm between classes.

Dance Shoes

Dance shoes will be another important part of your dance college kit, and depending on your course, you may need several different pairs. Having the right shoes for each class will help you feel comfortable, supported and ready to dance.

Ballet shoes

A staple for ballet classes, ballet shoes should fit securely and allow you to move comfortably through your feet. Your college may specify a particular style, colour or sole, so always check your uniform requirements first.

Pointe shoes

If pointe work is part of your training, you’ll need pointe shoes that are correctly fitted for your feet. It’s important to have these professionally fitted rather than simply choosing a pair based on appearance or size.

Jazz Shoes, Heels & Character Shoes

Jazz shoes are a staple for many dance college students and are often worn for jazz, commercial and musical theatre classes. Character shoes and dance heels may also be required, depending on your course, with some colleges recommending heeled dance boots for jazz training. Our Move Danna Leather Dance Boots offer an accessible option while still providing the quality, comfort and support needed for training.

Tap Shoes

If tap is part of your course, a good pair of tap shoes is a must-have. From different shoe styles to varying types of taps on the sole, there are plenty of options to choose from. Be sure to check your dance college’s requirements to find the right pair for your training.

Dance bag

To carry all of your dance college essentials, you’ll need a reliable dance bag that can keep up with your busy schedule. Look for something spacious, sturdy and comfortable to carry, with enough room for your dancewear, shoes and everyday essentials.

Luckily, Move Dance has a variety of dance bags to suit every dancer’s needs, from practical everyday bags to styles designed to carry everything you need for a full day of training.

Dance Accessories

It’s the little extras that can make a big difference on busy college days. Be sure to pack hair accessories such as hair ties, pins, nets and hairspray, as well as trainers for commercial, street or conditioning sessions. For styles that involve more floorwork, knee pads can help protect your knees. Recovery and first-aid essentials, such as a Theraband, foam roller and plasters, are also useful additions to your dance bag.

With your dance college essentials packed and ready to go, all that’s left is to enjoy this exciting new chapter and make the most of your training. Remember to check your college’s specific requirements before you start shopping, as every dance school will have its own kit list. Once you have everything you need, you’ll be ready to step into your first class feeling prepared and confident.
