What are the requirements to become a dance teacher
The requirements to become a dance teacher depends on the examination board, dance genre and where you want to teach. Many dancers ask ‘how do I become a dance teacher?’ Here are some things you typically need in order to become a dancer teacher:
- Dance training or professional experience
- First Aid certification (required by some studios or schools)
- DBS check (especially when working with children)
- Teaching certification or degree (optional but beneficial)
If you would like to work in high schools as well as private studios you may need a PGCE or a bachelor’s degree in dance education.
Have a strong dance background
One of the most important requirements to be a dance teacher is dance technique. Dance teachers need strong dance technique, usually in lots of different styles of dance such as ballet, commercial, tap and contemporary. Being versatile will make it easier for you to get a dance teaching job as you will be able to teach different classes across the school or studio. If you have recently graduated from college or just finished a professional contract, try and get yourself to a class at least once a week. It's easy to lose that technique you have worked so hard to build! This is the first step to becoming a dance teacher.
Get dance teaching experience
Dance experience is so important in order to get a proper understanding of how to become a dance teacher. It's a great way to build your confidence, learn how to communicate properly with your students and find your own teaching style.
Think about gaining a dance teaching certificate
Dance teaching certificates are not a requirement to become a dance teacher however they can increase your credibility and help you stand out from other dance teachers. Dance teaching certificates from the RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) and ISTD (International Society of Teachers of Dancing) can open the doors to more job opportunities.
Keep learning
Once you have met the basic requirements to become a dance teacher try and find ways to improve and develop your skills. The dance teaching world is always changing and evolving, and a good dance teacher is always learning. Stay on top of new teaching methods, trending choreography and classroom management.
