Finding the right tap shoes

Wednesday 11 Jan 2012

Starting out at tap dancing may seem so complicated when you discover the huge variety of tap shoes available. Generally leather shoes are preferred as the material allows your foot to breathe better than man-made materials, and is stronger and more durable. Other features for optimum comfort and wear include padded insole linings, high performance sock fabrics to wick away moisture, and even Kashmir linings. A popular style is the oxford shoe for men and women, as it has a classic look and is suitable for a variety of tap dance styles. There are a number of heel types and heights, as well and lace up, or buckle fastenings on offer.

The taps are usually made from aluminium and can vary in size and weight. Some dancers prefer the tap to fit to the edge of the shoe to give a greater range of ‘notes’. Others prefer a smaller tap to increase flexibility. Larger heels give a heavier, bassier sound. It depends on the type of dance style and sound you want to achieve. It’s always best to ask your dance teacher what they recommend for the style of dance you will be doing.
Capezio Teletone Taps have recessed cavities, are lightweight, and provide a higher pitched tone. These are highly popular and suitable for a wide range of abilities. Capezio do a selection of shoes with the Teletone II Rayow plates which are adjustable for a tuneable sound. Bloch have shoes with Shockwave plates, and Techno Taps which have a toe spring to maximise sound. Beginners usually start with a full sole shoe with a flat or low heel. Taps are often already fitted to the shoe, however if they are not, or if you wish to change the taps, these can be done in some dance shops, or by most cobblers.

More experienced dancers have been known to create a spilt sole in their shoes to improve flexibility and movement, however there are a great choice of ready-made split sole tap shoes now available. Many also feature a rubber non-slip patch on the soles to offer traction and control while dancing.
